How to Choose the Right Step Height for Your Senior Dog

How to Choose the Right Step Height for Your Senior Dog

Choosing dog step height

Before choosing dog step height you can refer to the chart below

Standard Dog Stair Height Chart
Number of Steps Total Stair Height Range Recommended Step Rise (Height) Best Suited For
3-Step 14″ – 20″ 4.5″ – 6.5″ Low couches, standard armchairs, low dog beds
4-Step 20″ – 28″ 5.0″ – 7.0″ Standard beds, high sofas, low vehicle tailgates
5-Step 28″ – 36″ 5.5″ – 7.2″ High pillow-top beds, tall truck tailgates, SUVs
6 to 7-Step 36″ – 50″ 6.0″ – 7.5″ Extra-tall platform beds, high-clearance truck beds

1. Measure Your Furniture

Before choosing dog stair height, pull out a tape measure. Measure the distance from the floor to the very top of your couch cushion or bed mattress.
  • The Golden Rule: Your pet stairs do not need to match the exact height of your furniture.
  • The Gap: It is perfectly fine if the stairs are 2 to 4 inches lower than the surface. Your dog can easily make that last tiny step onto the bed.

2. Check the "Riser" Height

In the human world, a “riser” is the vertical height of each individual step. For senior dogs, this measurement is critical.
  • Small & Senior Dogs: Look for an individual step height of 5 to 6 inches. Anything taller forces a stiff, arthritic dog to jump or strain their back legs.
  • The Sweet Spot:

3. Look for Deep Steps

Senior dogs need stability. If the step itself is too narrow, they might slip. Look for steps that are deep enough for your dog to securely place their entire paw and body weight on before taking the next step.

4. Prioritize Traction and Safety

Wood or plastic steps can be slick and scary for an older dog with weak paws. Always choose stairs with a soft, non-slip fabric surface. Removable, machine-washable covers are a huge bonus for easy cleanup!
